Patin fish (pangasius sp.) is a family of freshwater catfish. Sometimes known as silver catfish for the silvery lower underside and belly. This fish is famous in Malaysia, especially in Temerloh.
Patin fish is hardy and grows very fast, reaching a kilogramme in weight within 3 months if well fed and properly looked after. It feeds on anything from normal fish feeds to carcasses. However, I never give my patin fish "dirty" feeds because I rear the fish for my own consumption. I give my patin fish the normal fish feeds , tapioca leaves, bread and biscuits.
Recently the numbers have grown, and since I cannot consume all, I have to offer some for sale, just to partially get back the expenses I spend on the feeds. I have also distributed to my immediate family, relatives and friends for free.
If you have any experience about rearing, cooking or eating patin fish please share it with me here.
I will share the recipes of cooking patin fish in my next and other posts. Happy reading!
